Common Types of Lasers and Their Characteristics: Understanding the Variety and Applications

Lasers come in various types, classified primarily by their working material (solid, gas, liquid, semiconductor, etc.) and output characteristics (continuous, pulsed, wavelength, etc.). Here, we explore some common types of lasers and their distinctive features:

Classification by Working Material
1. Solid-State Lasers
Example: Nd:YAG Laser (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) Wavelength: Typically 1064 nm. Our GY-YHP-2 laser safety goggles can protect against 1064 nm.

Characteristics:

High energy, suitable for drilling, cutting, welding, and other processing tasks.
Capable of high-power pulse output.
Can produce green light (532 nm) through frequency doubling crystals.
Applications: Industrial processing, medical applications, military, and scientific research.

2. Gas Lasers
Examples: CO₂ Lasers, He-Ne Lasers Wavelengths:

CO₂ Laser: 10.6 μm (infrared). Our GY-CHP safety goggles are designed to protect against 10.6 μm CO₂ lasers.
He-Ne Laser: 632.8 nm (visible red light).
Characteristics:

Excellent beam quality and high stability.
CO₂ lasers are ideal for cutting non-metallic materials.
He-Ne lasers are commonly used in education, alignment, and laser pointers.
Applications: Industrial processing, optical experiments, medical uses, barcode scanning.

3. Liquid Lasers (Dye Lasers)
Working Material: Laser dyes dissolved in liquid. Wavelength: Tunable, wide range (400–1000+ nm).

Characteristics:

Tunable wavelength, ideal for spectral research.
Requires a pump light source, such as a laser or flashlamp.
Limited lifespan as dyes need replacement.
Applications: Research, spectral analysis, biological fluorescence labeling.

4. Semiconductor Lasers (Diode Lasers)
Wavelength: Customizable in infrared, visible, and ultraviolet ranges.

Characteristics:

Small size, high efficiency, easy modulation.
Low cost, suitable for mass commercial use.
Applications: Communication, optical storage (CD/DVD), laser pointers, printers, automotive LIDAR.

5. Fiber Lasers
Working Material: Rare-earth-doped (e.g., erbium, ytterbium) optical fiber. Wavelength: Commonly 1064 nm, 1550 nm.

Characteristics:

Excellent beam quality, high efficiency, good heat dissipation.
Can be integrated, miniaturized, and have low maintenance costs.
Applications: Metal cutting, laser marking, communication, medical uses.

Classification by Laser Output Characteristics
1. Continuous Wave (CW) Lasers
Stable output power.
Suitable for continuous heating, laser welding, etc.
2. Pulsed Lasers
Concentrated energy, high peak power.
Includes long pulse, short pulse, and ultrafast pulse (femtosecond lasers).
Used in micromachining, laser drilling, medical surgery, and spectral analysis.
